Mountain Form Studies

What I am looking at: Much of my photography consists of studies that reflect my insterest in system and chance based artworking. Digital photogrraphy allows me to very quickly capture an image that I can reference later in the studio. It has also begun to reference the work coming out of my studio as well.

Cloud Form Studies

Why Clouds? Much clouds are condensed water vapor, Sculpted by the elements. They look very solid when you are up close to them, Again these are studies of forms found in nature that have no authorship because they are simply the phenomenal result of climate conditions.

Canyon Studies

Canyons and Mountains, Various rock formations of course have different specifications and not being a geologist I couldn't tell you all the names to differentiate them here. Their form or carved out structure formed by thousands of years of erosion is what interests me the most. Once a river now a canyon. The physical forces of the earth itself unwittingly decide the shape the landscape will take.

Mud/Dirt Studies

As above so below.
Its interesting to me how scale can shift, yet visual characteristics are similar between a canyon and the runoff of an unsodded front yard.

Canopy Structure

Trees grow
But grow according to genetic coding on a cellular level. They grow taller and towards the light and if unhindered and well nourished continue to grow where the nutrients are most abundant. An example of an organism shaped by the conditions of the environment.

Water Studies

Clouds and water, wind and rain. The crossover of various systems in the ecosphere is so complete that often the line between one and another is impossiable to draw. Each flowing from one to the next. Digital photography enables me to study visual events in a selective manner, so that ideas have room to coalesce in relation to one another.

Wall Ivy

Naturally occurring murals; Self replenishing each year and redefining itself based on its reaction to the weather. Leaves change color as different levels of sunlight and water nourish the ivy creating the illusion of an intentionally composed and display work of art.

Taxonomic Study of Vans in Berlin

Collecting the Urban Butterfly: This turned into a daily practice while I walked the streets of my neighborhood at the time: Friedrichshain, Berlin. Over the course of a year I had collected more than 400 distinct specimens. The vans or LKW as they call them in Germany, serve a different purpose to each owner. It could be used for work, to live in or camp in, for travel, for transport (moving), etc. Every weekend the streets around the Flohmarkt (or Flea Market) were packed with vans of different sizes, makes, and models that had been spray-painted, modified and rejiggered to suit the owners needs and wants. It became like a hunt when I went out to find ones I had not already captured with my camera.

City Studies: Berlin

Stimulation overload; Anyone that has been to Berlin knows that it is a city for the eyes. There always seems to be something extraordinary happening right outside my door. Berlin is a wholly unique city full of new and old architecture, industry, art and design. A true city of the ages and much more culturally integrated than Chicago.

City Studies: Chicago

Street-level observation: I'm sure you have those experiences where you are walking along and you just see something right in front of your face and your like "Wait a minute! Thats amazing. just that right there." I do to, but half the time I don't have my camera with me. Here are some examples of when I do. Chicago is not the friendliest city for streetwalking, but taking photos of found street sculpture makes it less tedious.
